When you install the final version (RTM) of Visual Studio 2005, you should do so on a “clean” machine. That is, one that does not have a Beta version or CTP (Community Technology Preview) versions on it already. The recommended practice before RTM was to install on a VPC, or on a machine that you could easily “refresh”. However, I have run in to a handful of people that did neither of these, and are now trying to figure out how to get the Beta 2 off of there machine. Until now I had to recommend f-disk
… now I can tell you to go get the Automatic Unistall Tool that Dan has linked to.

This may not seem like a big deal, but yesterday I registered for my Texas driver’s license. I am now a licensed Texan. Even out car now had Texas license plates… it’s a significant mile stone in the whole relocation process. Oh yeah, last week we bought a house. I guess that’s big too.

<![CDATA[I'll be hopping on a plane heading for San Antonio, TX later today. Microsoft will be Launching Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005 and BizTalk2006 there on Thursday at the Westin La Cantera resort. It should be another great event. I'm a back up speaker (which means that I'll probably be working registration and check in
I know that it's a ways for anyone in Dallas, but since Dallas and OKC and Houston have been sold out for a while, I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of familiar faces down there. If you're in the area, you should drop by and say hi... plus, it's at a resort!
Here is the registration link: http://msevents.microsoft.com/cui/eventdetail.aspx?culture=en-US&eventid=1032285845&x=11&y=8]]>

Interesting article over at News Week. Java use is on the decline, .Net is growing. Cool.

Today is my first day back in the office in over 8 days. You wouldn't believe how much email I have to catch up on! I spent last week in Redmond for an intro to Microsoft class. It was amazing. Out of 90 people over 60% of the attendees were not from the US. We truly are a global company! I met some amazing people from France (yes I know), Poland, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Portugal, Peru, Venezuela, and I'm sure some places that I have missed.
This is what I discovered. People from all over the world like to have fun. Karaoke, was fantastic. The people from France are fantastic, even when you disagree on politics, there are tons of things that you agree on. Check out this french radio station. I'm loving this music. I'm sure the words are all about having the government pay for everything
or something, but I can't understand most of it... they played OPP the other day, that was cool.
Next time I get the chance to go skiing, I'm going. I had the chance, but I had left all of my “ski” stuff at home. Not that I have that much stuff, snow bib, jacket, ski hat, gloves... but still. I didn't think that buying all of that stuff AND paying for lift tickets for the day would be worth it, I was wrong.
Four hours north of Redmond in Canada is the most amazing skiing in the world (so they tell me). The 2010 winter Olympics are supposed to be there I guess. If I can go there some time... I'm there.
The only “let down” from the week; we got to go see the Microsoft Executive Briefing Center, that was absolutely amazing, but while we were there they showed us the DOOR to the MS Home that I have read so much about. He showed us the DOOR and told us about it. We couldn't go in because of some scheduling conflict or something, the guide was like “just schedule a tour” and we were like “this IS our tour!”... no dice. I really wanted to see that place.
A fantastic week... now back to my email.

Kristian Rickard announced today that she will be leaving Geniant (my former employer) and joining the ranks of Microsoft (my current employer) in Redmond. After working with Kristian for over 4 months I can tell you this. Kristian is one of those people that you really like to work with and for. She is first class, top notch and really knows her stuff. She meets people where they are, and helps them to become better. After countless lunches, many laughs and several completed projects I can say this, Microsoft has made a great move hiring K. Even though she’ll no longer be in Dallas (what’s that about), I can’t wait to see the trouble great things that she gets involved with in Redmond. I wish her the absolute best, and can’t wait to hang out at Tech Ready, MGB, and other events where our paths might cross again. Congratulations!

The Visual Studio 2005 Launch in Dallas was almost two weeks ago. Yes, SQL Server 2005, and BizTalk 2006 were launch at the same time, but for me, it was all about VS. My talk went well, although there were a couple of "hick-ups" with the demos. Visual Studio croaked on me three times during one demo... as it turns out the VPC was build with the CTP version (Community Technology Preview) of SQL Server (not the RTM final release) and so it was conflicting with Visual Studio when I tried to do a SQL Assembly in VS. What a let down, that is such a cool demo when it works. BTW - if you are using the final release of everything fine! So, there I am (in front of 2000 people) restarting Visual Studio three times, very frustrating.
Everyone got to see Visual Studio's quick recovery features, that is, it restarts FAST from a drop like that, it even picked up exactly where I had left it. Most of the comments to me afterwords were very positive (?), I guess. People said stuff to me like, "way to tap dance", "good recovery", "you handled that blow up great"... not exactly what you *want* to hear after a talk in front of a crowd of 2000.
So, here's the funny part. Less than four hours later I arrive home and turn on my computer, almost immediately I get an IM from a friend in CANADA; CANADA! He says, “so I hear that you had some blow up at your launch. (!) Yeah, bless the Internet, he read about it from some entry over at Geeks with blogs. So he didn't know that it was my demo that had locked up a couple of times, but still that was great.
Oh well, at least *I* didn't puke on stage. Lovely.
