Dear Apple,
I’m not a fan. Yes, your hardware is awesome. The Mac Book Pro is possibly the best laptop on the market for Vista. I’ll probably buy one for my next machine. You were first with the iPod (congrats with that), but I *love* the UI and innovation lately with my Zune. I still use my iPod Nano, but only with Rock Box (Linux) on it. But, why oh why do you insist on shipping iTunes with everything? (ahem, apple TV, QuickTime, etc..) Plus, I hate QuickTime. It was nice for a season, but to me… it’s like using RealPlayer. (Why would you). Give me Flash video or a WMV any day. And why is it Apple that you hate your developers? No seriously, you seem to despise the people that love your “platform”.
That being said, I want to help you. yes, this may seem far-fetched, but I want to give you my sagely wisdom for taking over the world. I find that most things that are wrong with the world… they didn’t take my advice. No, really… you can look at almost anything wrong in the world and just say to your self, “I bet they didn’t ask Caleb before they did that”… and you’d probably be right.
So here you go, take this advice and conquer all… ignore it, and be like those other people that didn’t take my advice. The choice (in my best Morpheus to Neo voice) I leave to you.
Here are the Three Steps to take over the world:
Buy Adobe – There you go. That in it self would be a HUGE game changer for you. I’m not saying that you don’t already have a team of very skilled designers working for you, but let’s face it. Most people already associate Adobe products with running on a Mac. Sure, I know that neither of you can write a runtime worth developing on, but imagine what you could do together! Ok, that’s out there. Think it over.
Become a Vista OEM. Yes, you heard me correctly. You should directly sell and support the OS of one of your greatest rivals. Let’s face it, you are an incredible hardware company, but just a so-so platform company. It’s already been estimated that over 10% of all Mac Book Pro’s are running Vista. My guess is that the number would be higher if you included everyone running Vista in Parallels, Book Camp or VM Ware Fusion. Tons of people use Macs… but I don’t know anyone that doesn’t also run Vista or XP in Fusion or Book Camp. Don’t fight it, play to your strengths, be the hardware people that you’ve already been for so long. In fact, I predict that if you started offering Vista as an option from the Apple web site and stores, you would soon kill Dell’s laptop business. I bet that idea scares them to death. Imagine how many companies would embrace your laptops for executives, developers, and sales people that today can’t because they have standardized on a Windows platform.
Call me. Not everything in life is going to be as easy as reading a blog post. Especially when it involves world domination. 🙂
Oh, and if you’re Microsoft, I’d look seriously at Adobe. That one’s for free. 😉
