I’ve been trying out a couple of different ways to share presentations that I’ve given. You can see the result of SlideShare below. I like the social aspects of SlideShare (commenting, tagging, linking between decks), but I haven’t been happy with the way it handles transparencies or animations (it doesn’t).
I’ve posted the same deck as an XPS file on my SkyDrive. Which do you think is a better format? (you can grab the free XPS viewer from Microsoft)
While I’m at it… here are a bunch of my other talks in PPTX format on my SkyDrive.
Enjoy!

One of the great things about speaking for INETA is traveling to places that I’ve never been before. July is going to be a little different for me. I was born in Southern California and grew up just an hour north of San Diego in a town called Temecula. (Except for 3 years when I lived in Okinawa)
We moved from Murrieta to Tulsa in 2001 and I haven’t been back to California since then. It’s hard to believe that it’s already been 7 years! Aside from the people and family that are in California there are only 3 things that I really miss. So I’m really looking forward to meeting up with my Dad and having a good lunch while I’m there.
If you are going to be in the San Diego area in July… make sure to stop by the .NET User Group and say hi! We might even go grab a bite to eat afterwards… if I used to know you in Southern California… send me an email: blogger[at]calebjenkins[dot]com.
The topic is still TBD, but it will probably be one of these:
- ASP.NET AJAX with Visual Studio 2008
- Silverlight with Visual Studio 2008 + Expression Blend
- Developer Designer Zen (bringing two world’s together)
- Better Application Design with practical loose coupling
What would you want the topic to be?

I mentioned the Dallas TechFest before, but what I failed to mention was that I was invited to participate in a panel discussion on "Building Communities" that was recorded for an episode of .NET Rocks! I know that I’m a little (ok, very) late mentioning this, but the episode is now live… you can listen to it here. Enjoy!

Just a quick note: I’ll be speaking at the Spokane .NET User Group tomorrow night covering ASP.NET AJAX with Visual Studio 2008.
This will be my first time in Spokane ever. I’m planning on driving over to see Lake Coeur D’Alene while I’m there too. I’ve heard so many nice thing about this area that I’m really looking forward to the couple of hours that I’ll be out there.
OK, I have to get up in 3 hours to make my *early* flight (a super, super early flight! ugh.. )
Anyways, if you’re in the area… stop by the User Group and say hi!

Well.. not really *my* book. It’s not like I wrote it or anything like that. I was the technical editor on this new book, "Beginning C# 3.0: An Introduction to Object Oriented Programming" by Jack Purdum.
While most people that read this blog will probably not read the book (it’s targeted for _very_ new programmers), there was a ton that I learned while doing the book… but mostly about what it takes to work on a book. It takes a lot!
It also gave me a great appreciation for all of the authors, editors and publishers out there and the effort that they go through to bring us great titles.

As I mentioned earlier I was invited this month to be a judge at the Sabre Hack Day event. It was a huge honor and a lot of fun. I love these events, but even more I love the fact that Sabre’s senior management see the value in giving their employees the flexibility and freedom to participate is such a great event.
I’ve been to several companies where the theory de jure seems to be around developing a “COE” or Center of Excellence. Unfortunately, most of these COE’s end up being very self-serving and inwardly focused.
I’ve been an advocate of developing a different type of “COE” for a while now. Companies need to look for ways to develop “Cultures of Excellence” or “Communities of Excellence”. That’s the sort of COE’s that are important and that is the sort of thing that Sabre is helping to accomplish. In other words, COE’s need to be outwardly focused - raising the bar for everyone.

Today I’ll be out at the Sabre Holdings Southlake, TX office for another Hack Day. It actually started yesterday at noon, and will not end until 1pm today. (24 hours of pure coding with whom ever and on what ever you want to hack out) I attended the last one and it was a lot of fun. This year, my friend and global Hack Day organizer extraordinair, Jay invite me to participate as a Judge! (I’ve heard that Giovanni Gallucci will be there as well!) This is a true honor and very exciting for me. I can’t wait to see all of the crazy hacks that come out of today!

Update: I had to swap out the “embedded” video for a image with a link because of because of the differences between Internet Explorer and Firefox. I’ll post more on that later.
This is *very* exciting! I know that I talked about it the other day, but just to make things easier, here is one of the videos that I did for xTrain directly emended from Adobe.tv.

Tuesday was the Official Microsoft Launch of Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 in Dallas. It was great. I got to hang out with many of my fellow MVP’s as well as people like Mark, Keith, Phil and Rachel (also Jason, Toi, Scott… and many more!) at the “ask the experts” table (which Microsoft *incorrectly* labeled the MVP - Microsoft Valued Partners booth - I guess even they have too many TLA’s!). I missed the Keynote, but I did get to see Chris Koenig present at another session on developing web applications with VS 2008 and he did a great job.
While walking through the halls I did run in to Keith Combs, a friend of mine from Microsoft - he presents all over the region at TechNet events. (think MSDN Event for MCSE’s - if that helps.) Keith has a very active blog and interviewed me for that. You can see the interview on Keith’s blog.
